Sponsorship
Our organisation is a small charity for which the principal aim is to assist poor and destitute children in Uganda to get an education. Without our help many children would not be able to afford to attend school, as unlike the UK, schooling in Uganda is not free. Therefore, in many cases, orphans and poor children cannot afford to attend school.
Child sponsorship costs £25 per month for a child to attend school. Basically, the role of a sponsor is to make monthly payments to the Amana UK, who in turn transfers the cash to Uganda where it is used to pay the school fees and medical expenses for a particular child. In return, the sponsor receives updates on the child’s progress two or three times per year and newsletters as and when they are produced. Sponsors receive a health review with a photo of their child every year after the visit from the team from Amana UK. In recent years this has had to be done virtually due to Covid restrictions.
Once a child is placed on the sponsorship programme, it is hoped that the sponsorship will continue until that child reaches the end of secondary education or vocational training. Children have been taken out of the system by the parents/guardians, for instance there have been occasions where the family have moved away. Children have also been lost, tragically because of illness; malaria and AIDS are both prevalent diseases in this area. in some cases children have been removed from the programe due to not attending school but this is rare and we try an give children as much support as possible before we make the decision to remove them.
Giving
One off or regular donations are always appreciated and well used; for example:
Going to university or vocational training brings an added cost and we would like to help them become qualified professionals. To help them pay for this we are setting up a Further Education grant to support the children to further their education once sponsorship has run its course.
For the beginning of the school year we have sent money for 39 pairs of shoes for the sponsored children who need them for school. It costs £10 for a pair of good quality second hand Clarks or Startrite.
Last Christmas we sent money to buy food for all the sponsored children and their families. This was received with much joy and thanks.
